Just one month old, the Eastern Iowa CGOA donated dozens of scarves to the Red Scarves Project. What is the Red Scarves Project? Read on to learn more and how you can participate.
Created by Foster Care to Success (FC2S), the Red Scarf Project sends care pckages to college and training program students who have experienced foster care.
Every fall, FC2S relies on the red scarves to fill Valentine's Day care packates that are mailed to it's students.
FC2S began mailing its students Valentine's Day care packages in 2005, and in the first seven years, delivered over 20,000 red scarves to foster youth in colleges and training programs across the country.
"Every year, we are awed by the works of art that are so generously created for our students." Eileen McCaffrey, Executive Director of Foster Care to Success.
FC2S welcomes donations of red scarves between September 1 and December 15. Scarves should be approximatly 60 inches long and 5 to 8 inches wide. All scarves must be in the shad of red or in similar tones or designs, such as burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or mulicolor hues including red.
Addional scarf guidelines can be found by visiting FC2S/Red Scarf Project.
Lisa, a member of the Eastern Iowa CGOA writes: I learned of the Red Scarf project in the Autumn of 2012. Our eldest daughter asked me to crochet scarves or cowls for her college roommate and friends. I made six cowls, included them in a care package, and sent them off. While preparing the care packages, I thought about students who wouldn't receive packages, and turned to the internet.
Since 2012, I have been crocheting red scarves. I have always asked my crochet and knitting friends if they'd like to make one (or two), and the answer has always been yes.
In 2025, our second month of the guild, 15 scarves were mailed, the fullest box to date!
Our goal is to continue to support this worthy cause and donate many more scarves and cowls in the years to come.
